[Manuel Rodriguez / 2022]

ENTERTAINMENT is a work that doesn't start; it interrupts an order and balance to make way for the show. On this stage, three disoriented and affected beings move themselves, fueled by their audience and their self-image.

As if entertainment and meditation were alike, it proposes a cruel yet tender commentary on empathetic distance. When it is large, as in the hundreds of fleeting images that make up a mandala or an Instagram profile, the character is only a part of a part made up of parts. And only if this distance is small, can we truly know and confront the anthropomorphic being that resides both in me and in the other.

The piece unfolds in three chapters: First, Mandala, the second is a doubling of the first, an episode for two performers titled Fractal. And the third, Totem, a metaphor that encompasses the previous chapters, symbolizing an imaginary space outside of time, located between the viewer's gaze and the performers' bodies.

This work revisits my concerns with identity, contemplative states, and liminal spaces.
